How a piece decides what it wants to be

People often ask what a piece is going to be before it is finished. The honest answer is that we usually do not know. It is decided along the way, and the piece has more say in it than we do.
Working outward from one bead
It starts with colour, and one anchor to build out from. The next bead is chosen because it looks right beside the last one, not because a plan called for it. Slowly a direction appears, and the piece starts to tell you what it needs.
A piece is finished when it stops asking for more — not when a schedule says so.
Knowing when to stop
The hardest part is not adding the last element — it is not adding one more after it. When it is right, it goes quiet. That is the moment it gets shown to Mum.
